Eclectic Approaches to the General Music Class in Korea

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the desirable approaches to the general music class Korea in older to offer student-centered and experience-oriented music education Since most of the music classes in Korea have been teacher-centered and knowledge-oriented for about 50 years, it is time to change the new direcrtion in music education. The uses of behavioral objectives, iconic learning, call chart, progammed listening, Kodaly method, and Orff approach were selected as new methods to be student-centered, experience-oriented, and easily applicable to Korean educational situations. The principles of each approach were briefly discussed and the sample lesson plans of the approaches were presented. And then, each technique was applied to the conventional musical activities such as singing session, instrumental session, creative session, and listening session. The applied lesson plans of each session were also provided.
