ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the causes of children`s inaccurate singing and to propose the effective teaching strategies for it. This will address what teacher and children in the classroom may do to develop and improve singing accuracy, including some suggestions for implementing instruction techniques, planning singing activities, and arranging the singing environment. In order to examine the causes of children`s inaccurate singing and the fundamentals for teaching strategies I reviewed the studies within four categories: (1) principles of controlling vocal pitch; (2) tone deaf and inaccurate singing; (3) causes of children`s inaccurate singing; (4) teaching modes for controlling vocal pitch. Taken together, the findings suggested that the causes of inaccurate singing results from deficits in pitch perception, poor tonal memory and poor vocal control. Based on the evidences from those studies, I came to conclusion that teachers need to know the strategic approaches to provide remedial help for inaccurate singing. Therefore I proposed various teaching strategies which generally fall into three categories: (1) pitch perception; (2) instruction in vocal technique and additional drill in singing exercises; (3) teaching mode. It includes pre-singing activities that a teacher may use to help children develop a foundation for singing accuracy, a discussions of appropriate vocal models, and an examination of the use of various kinesthetic activities and breath management techniques to increase singing accuracy. I expect that the teacher can remedy children`s inaccurate singing confidently and effectively with these strategic approaches I proposed.
