The Relationship between Music subject as a liberal arts class and Academic Adjustment, Social Adjustment, Emotional Adjustment of Freshmen

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study intended to identify the relationship between music subject as a liberal arts class and adjustment of school life for freshmen. The study was carried out on 573 male and female freshmen, who are attending culture and arts subject as a liberal arts class of a university in K region. A survey about features of student background, subject type, teaching behavior, class satisfaction, stress, adjustment of school life were used as the measuring instrument. To investigate the relationship between each variables, applied correlation, stepwise Regression Analysis on the collected data. As a result of the study, the academic adjustment, social adjustment and personal-emotional adjustment of freshmen appeared to be significantly affected by factors of student background, subject type, teaching behavior, class satisfaction and stress, while class satisfaction was found to be the critical factor that had a common effect. In addition, the music subject as a liberal arts class was found to have a significant effect over academic adjustment, social adjustment and personal-emotional adjustment. Therefore, for the increase of students` class satisfaction, an efficient teaching behavior must promote a change in the stress factor, while invigorating a practice-oriented general elective education based on experience and communication to encourage improvement for a new and differentiated music subject as a liberal arts class. In addition, with regard to the effective improvement of practical education in music subject as a liberal arts class, a school education culture must be established in the level of Adult lifelong learning with a phased practical studies and continuous education.
