Analysis of Korean Music Appreciation and Understanding in Highschool Music Textbooks According to National Curriculums

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we present directions of Korean music education to improve our textbooks, by analyzing sections of Korean music appreciation and understanding up to three highschool textbooks which follow the first national highschool curriculum through the present 2009 national curriculum. One textbook was analyzed from the frist curriculum, two from the second and third, and three from the rest. Especially we present basic information needed to improve the sections of Korean music appreciation and understanding. The results are follows. First, the highschool curriculums from the first to the 2007 revision require the inclusion of Korean music in the sections of singing, instrument, composition, appreciation, and understanding. Moreover, the guideline specifically emphasizes including Korean music as much as possible. Second, in the section of Korean music understanding, the textbooks treat Korean music history the most. Then Korean music instruments, classification, scales, and jandan are treated in that order of importance. Third, the textbooks treat Korean music appreciation and understanding the most in the 6th and 7th curriculums, and the textbooks consider Korean music less in variety and frequency of treatment in the following curriculums. Fourth, the textbooks tend to treat instruments in the form of direct performance rather than in the form of theoretical introduction.
