A Study on the Operation of After-school Korean Traditional Music Education Programs in Elementary Schools

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine the operational status of after-school Korean traditional music education programs in elementary schools. To attain the goal, a survey was conducted to 28 Korean traditional music instructors at 31 elementary schools located in four cities operating after-school Korean traditional music education programs. Selecting five instructors out of them, this researched conducted an in-depth interview. The questionnaire dealt mainly with the current status of Korean traditional music instructors, students, and the operation of Korean traditional music class, and the in-depth interview was mainly intended to examine difficulties in operating after-school Korean traditional music class and how to improve them. Based on the results of analysis, this author has drawn the implications as follows: first, it is needed to develop new and diverse after-school Korean traditional music programs and teaching materials fitting them. Second, instructors should make efforts to implement various types of after-school Korean traditional music programs. Third, positive supports are needed to be provided for after-school Korean traditional music education. Lastly, it is necessary for both schools and parents to change their recognition about after-school class.
