ABSTRACT

This study investigated the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), which had significantly influenced American music education for the last one-hundred-ten years, with focus on its organizational structure and management. The investigation was carried out through examination of all of the publications of the Association related to its organizational structure and governance and activities. Especially important to the study were NAfME constitution and bylaws, National Executive Board(NEB) codified policies, articles of Music Educators Journal, audit report materials, and publications for celebrating 100 years of the association. Broadly viewed, there were three major areas which could have important implications for Korean Music Education Society as follows: (1)authority vested in the three presidents(president, president-elect, immediate past president) as national officers and strict policies applied for composition of NEB and national assembly members were worthy of note; (2)the effective advocacy activities in a challenging historical era to strengthen the place of music as a core subject in public school curriculum had great implications for us; and (3)the establishment of the Historical Center at the University of Maryland was worth noticing. In addition, the establishment of office with residing staff was noteworthy. Furthermore, consideration should be given to studying on applicability of these organizational features of the NAfME for the advancement of Korean Music Education Society in the future. Its examination should be approached from long-term and short-term aspects respectively.
